What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental Implants in Venice, Florida — Placed and Restored by One Clinician.

A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is placed in the jawbone, where it naturally integrates with bone over time, creating a stable foundation for a custom restoration.

Without a root, the jawbone beneath the gap begins to resorb — silently. Over months and years the bone thins, adjacent teeth shift and facial structure changes. An implant is the only restoration that preserves the bone, the bite and the teeth around it, unlike bridges, which require grinding down healthy adjacent teeth, or dentures, which sit on top of tissue and can accelerate bone loss.

At Smile Spot, Dr. Sellappan personally plans, places and restores your implant in-house. From CBCT-guided planning and a 3D surgical guide to the final porcelain crown, your care is handled by one experienced clinician — for better precision, consistency and long-term results.

Porcelain Crown

A custom restoration that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth.

Abutment

Connects the implant to the crown.

Titanium Implant

Replaces the root and integrates with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration.

Preserves jawbone density

The only restoration that maintains the bone and helps prevent resorption.

Stands independently

Does not rely on adjacent teeth for support or require grinding down healthy teeth.

Cleans like a natural tooth

Brush and floss normally for simple, everyday care.

Proven long-term success

Clinical studies report survival rates above 95% at 10 years (IJOMI).

One clinician. A more thoughtful implant experience.

Dr. Sellappan plans, places and restores your implant in-house using CBCT imaging, a 3D surgical guide and a fully digital workflow. You'll work with the same doctor from consultation to final crown — for better precision, consistency and long-term results.

Two Pathways

Every case is different. Both paths lead to permanent.

Whether you're missing one tooth or a full arch, we create a custom implant solution designed for your anatomy, your goals and your life — starting with the same physician-led precision.

Single Tooth / Multi-Unit

Replace One
or Several Teeth

A single implant can replace one missing tooth without affecting adjacent teeth. Multiple implants can support a bridge for larger spaces — restoring function, preventing bone loss and keeping your smile in balance. CBCT-planned, surgically guided and matched to your existing smile exactly.

  • Looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth
  • Preserves adjacent healthy teeth
  • Helps maintain bone and facial structure
  • Great for single or multiple missing teeth

Full Arch / All-on-X

A Complete Smile
in Greater Confidence

All-on-X replaces a full arch of missing or failing teeth with a fixed set of implant-supported teeth. Four to six implants anchor the arch — designed for long-term stability, improved function and a natural-looking smile, often with a temporary set the same day, replacing failing dentition or unstable dentures with full function and facial support.

  • Restores a full arch of teeth
  • Fixed, not removable
  • Helps prevent ongoing bone loss
  • Improves chewing, speech and confidence

Treatment Timeline

Your timeline depends
on your bone.

Bone volume, sinus anatomy, and the number of teeth being replaced all affect how long your treatment takes. Here is how the four paths compare.

The Engineering Infrastructure

Why our dental implants in Venice
are engineered differently.

From 3D diagnosis to final bite verification, each step is designed to reduce guesswork and carry the original plan through to the final restoration. If a clinic places your implant using a flat 2D X-ray and free-hand surgery, they are operating blind — here is what we use instead.

Diagnose
Traditional 2D X-ray compared with 16-FOV 3D CBCT showing nerve canal and sinus cavity — Smile Spot Dentistry, Venice, FL

16-FOV CBCT Imaging

We map your bone in 3D
before touching you.

A detailed 3D scan shows your bone volume, sinus anatomy, nerve location and surrounding structures, so your implant is planned in the right position from the start. Without it a dentist drills from a flat X-ray — blind to bone depth, nerve location and the sinus boundary, risking nerve damage, sinus perforation or placement into compromised bone.

Capture
Conventional putty impression compared with an iTero digital scan showing margin fit — Smile Spot Dentistry, Venice, FL

iTero Digital Blueprint

No putty. No distortion
from a conventional impression.

We capture a highly accurate digital model of your teeth and bite, giving us a precise restorative dataset for planning the final tooth before surgery begins. Putty impressions shrink in transit, and that microscopic gap at the crown margin is where bacteria enter — causing peri-implantitis and silent bone loss around the implant.

Transfer
Free-hand implant placement compared with guided placement using a 3D-printed surgical guide — Smile Spot Dentistry, Venice, FL

3D-Printed Surgical Guide

The digital plan becomes
a physical guide.

Implant position, depth and angulation are planned from your CBCT and transferred clinically through a custom 3D-printed guide for precise, minimally invasive placement. Free-hand surgery relies on the dentist's eye alone, and a tilted implant concentrates chewing forces at an unnatural angle, overloading the bone until the implant fails.

Verify
Standard bite check showing uneven forces compared with Kois verification showing distributed contacts — Smile Spot Dentistry, Venice, FL

Kois Functional Harmony

Your bite is engineered,
not eyeballed.

We verify your final restoration in harmony with how your teeth, joints and muscles work together, following the Kois functional philosophy for long-term stability. Most clinics check only whether the crown touches when you bite straight and ignore lateral movement — a crown set a fraction too high absorbs the full crushing force of your bite, causing TMJ pain and crown fracture.

Kois Center Philosophy

Technology gives us more information. Clinical experience turns it into a better result for you.

Physician-Led Care

Placed by the doctor
who restores it.

Most practices refer implant surgery to an oral surgeon — then restore the crown separately. At Smile Spot, Dr. Sellappan places the implant and seats the final crown. The same clinician who planned your case in 3D executes it and finishes it. No broken chain. No fragmented care.

This matters clinically. The doctor who placed the implant knows the exact angulation, torque value, and soft tissue architecture.

The restoration is designed from the first scan — not adapted after surgery.

Common Questions

Everything you wanted to ask.

What implant options does Smile Spot offer?

Smile Spot offers two implant solutions: single tooth implants for replacing one missing tooth without altering adjacent teeth, and All-on-X full arch implants for patients with multiple missing teeth, failing dentition, or the instability of removable dentures. Both are placed and restored in-house by Dr. Sellappan — no referral to an outside provider at any stage.

Does Dr. Sellappan place and restore implants in-house?

Yes. Dr. Sellappan performs both surgical placement and the final crown restoration without referring to a separate provider. The same clinician who planned your case in 3D places it and finishes it — fewer appointments, complete continuity, and a result built from day one not adapted after the fact.

Can I get a same-day tooth?

Where primary implant stability allows — typically in anterior cases — an in-house 3D-printed provisional crown can be placed the same day as surgery. For posterior molar cases a protective healing cap is placed instead, allowing full osseointegration before loading with the final permanent crown.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most patients with a missing tooth or failing restoration are candidates. Dr. Sellappan assesses bone foundation, soft tissue health, and systemic wellness at your first visit. Bone loss is a planning variable, not a disqualifier — a bone graft can often create the necessary foundation.

How do I know if I'm a candidate for full arch implants?

Full arch candidacy depends on bone volume, overall health, and extent of tooth loss. Most patients are stronger candidates than they expect — even significant bone loss can often be addressed. Our four-question assessment takes seconds. Take the All-on-X Candidacy Quiz →

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Most plans classify implants as a restorative elective and do not cover them. Some plans may contribute if tooth loss was due to an accident or injury. HSA and FSA funds are eligible. CareCredit and Cherry financing are both accepted at Smile Spot.
